Rasika Shekar, A flute affair

Born in Dubai, raised in United States and spreading her music in India, This is how Rasika Shekar can be described in one sentence.

Rasika was born in Dubai and raised in New Jersey, USA.  She is trained in Carnatic and Hindustani classical music, initially learning Carnatic vocals and violin from her grandmother. She started playing Carnatic flute at the age of 14. Rasika earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering but soon after graduating, started spending more time in India for her further studies on Indian classical music.

Rasika started her musical journey as a vocalist with renowned ghazal singer Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan as and toured along with him for Ghazal concerts all over India. In 2012 she made her debut in Bollywood for the movie Dekh Indian Circus under the Music direction of Shankar Ehasaan Loy. Later she sung in few more Bollywood movies like 2 States, Kill Dil, Katti Batti, Love Games etc.

Rasika thanks god for having born in a musical family, her grandmother was an A grade violinist at All India Radio and that had helped her in getting closer with the music at a very young age. After moving to US she initially started training in singing at the age of 11 and later she shifted it to flute when her mom introduced her to a flute teacher from there it’s just history.
