Water is the resource which is nowadays depleting from the earth rapidly and most parts of the world is facing this condition. Even if About 71 percent of the Earth’s surface is water, we still face the problem of fresh water deficiency. It’s under this context that scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and University of California, Berkeley made a device powered by solar which makes water from air.
An invention by a chemistry professor in University of California, Berkeley named Yaghi invented metal organic frameworks also known as MOF. MOFs are compounds created by combining metals with organic molecules which will create a product which have the physical property to store water in large quantities. Evelyn Wang, a Mechanical engineer from MIT used the principle of MOF and created a water harvester which can produce 2.8 liters of water using 0.9 Kilogram of MOF in 12 hour. To simplify this device will suck water vapor from atmosphere in low humidity; it can produce 3 liters of water for each KG of sponge like absorber which it contains. This harvester will be a major milestone in the history of mankind as it can be used to store large quantity of water for longer period of time.
