Savitha dropped her PhD studies and decided to make a career out of what she loved and decided to make her passion into profession. She doesn’t have any professional certificate in sound engineering as what all she learned was either through the internet or from the advice and tips received from her friends who works in the related fields. As we say experience is the best teacher, Savitha grabbed all her knowledge from experience and now she is one of the busiest sound editors in Indian film industry with experience on working in more than a dozen of Bollywood movies which includes Dangal, Barfi, Haider. Let’s hear that inspiring story of Savitha Nambrath and her voyage from a PhD dropped out to a leading sound editor.
How you got addicted to the world of sound?
I came to Mumbai in 2009 to do my PhD in Mumbai University. I was staying with friends who were working in the film industry. I met lots of sound guys here. Since I was curious about sound editing, one of my friends installed sound editing software in my computer. Then I started learning by surfing on the net and with my friends help. And finally I got to do a friend’s short film, which was screened in Kashish international film festival l. Since I started enjoying sound editing, I discontinued my PhD in Geography and gave my full attention to sound editing.
Sound engineer or sound designing is a common term that we all are familiar with, but you are specialized in sound editing. So what’s sound editing all about and what its relevance in the film industry?
I worked as a sound designer as well in many short films and in an Oriya feature film (Tulsi Apa) as well. As a sound editor we add and balance layers of sounds to the visuals as per the need of a scene and as per the requirements from the sound designers too. We mainly execute all the sound design ideas from directors and sound designers.
